Workhops

One, two and three day courses in mosaic are available at Nathalie’s studio in London. Courses cater for beginners, people with intermediate level experience or any level of advanced.

There is a minimum of theoretical preparation allowing you to begin your creation almost straight away in classes with a maximum of 6 students, taking your finished work home with you at the end of the workshop.

The day begins with a brief introduction on “How to create a mosaic design” followed by Nathalie explaining the stages of sculpting a tile into any shape of your choosing so your mosaic-making can evolve freely.

Nathalie then advises and guides you on your individual journey providing useful tips, insights and troubleshooting assistance from her years of experience.

Beginners can expect to take home a piece of work 20x20cm for a one-day workshop, 30x25cm for a two-day, and up to 40x35cm or larger for three. (‘Larger’ because if for instance pursuing the ‘picassiette’ method employing broken china where coverage of surface area is greater.)

For intermediates, Nathalie has experience of a huge range of techniques which she shares and offers in an atmosphere of complete freedom of choice. Techniques that might be experimented with are working on mesh or with the indirect method etc.

For advanced students, techniques can be explored in depth ultimately working towards mosaics which may wish to emerge from the studio. This could involve 3D object work; exploring surfaces and textures other than smooth or flat; or building a vision from an organic perspective.

Costs are £110 per person for one day, £195 per person for a two-day course, and £275 per person for three-days. Price includes all materials such as MDF wood or a mirror, PVA and cement adhesives, a wide selection of mosaic tiles, tools, refreshments…. and a delicious home-cooked lunch.

If participants know in advance they would like to work with a particular material (especially unusual or expensive ones such as gold, silver, stones, metals, marbles) they should contact Nathalie to arrange the sourcing of a sufficient quantity and an estimate of cost.

Available to buy in the studio shop are : pre-cut wooden shapes such as geckos, giraffes, frogs, butterflies, dragonflies, fish, owls, cacti, mirrors, dichotic beads, some stones and tools.

A pre-booking fee of £100 for a two day class or £50 for one day is required. If participants wish to pursue mosaics further, Nathalie can provide a list of mosaic suppliers from the UK and around the world. Workshops begin at 10 am and finish around 4 pm. Trains run regularly to East Dulwich station or there is ample free parking in the surrounding streets. Click here for a map.

Nathalie reserves the right to cancel a weekend workshop a week in advance if cancellations reduce numbers to below a feasible level. Full refund will be made if requested or you can book in for a future date.

Student Feedbacks

What a lovely way to spend a weekend - a nice group of people, a calm and relaxed atmosphere and such a generous array of beautiful materials to work with...and very nice lunches too! I must say it was the nicest workshop of any kind that I have been on. You are such a supportive teacher. We all came away with such fantastic pieces. My mosaic is now hanging in my bathroom and it looks great. You've given me the confidence to continue with more projects. Many, many thanks. Ann-Marie Morgan

The workshop was thoroughly enjoyable, I had never tried mosaic art before so was a bit apprehensive when I signed up, but I am very glad I did. You created a very relaxed informal atmosphere, which along with your guidance made it easy to learn. The workshop gave me so much confidence that I went out the next weekend and bought myself all the tools I needed to start work on my own. I am now close to completing my first piece and intend on carrying on with this for a long time to come! Rachel Neal – Sept 2008

I really really enjoyed the workshop the other day - I said to my husband when I got home that I felt like I'd been on a two week holiday...I felt like I hadn't been at home for months - I felt totally relaxed. It was such a luxury to spend some time being myself rather than a teacher, interpreter, mother or wife. My gorgeous tiles have taken pride of place on my mantlepiece and have attracted lots of positive comments. I'm feeling slightly obsessed with arts and crafts now and have even resurrected my cross stitch!! Helen, Oct 2008

I had a fantastic and relaxing weekend. I really enjoyed the format at your house, it felt very comfortable and relaxing and was inspiring to see your pieces. Also lovely lunch, good choice of materials and styles, and good creative advice. Beth Chaudhary – Oct 2008

I really enjoyed the workshop last weekend, I thought it was excellent, and I will be keen to do another in the future. Thank you for your time and expertise. Kirsty Weston – December 2008

I really enjoyed the one-day mosaic workshop - it managed to be relaxing and stimulating at the same time. Nathalie is an excellent teacher who quickly assesses the people in her class and works to their individual strengths, making it a very enjoyable day for everyone. I'd highly recommend this workshop! Frances – August 08

Thank you for having me in your home, the course was great and taught me all I needed to know to start my own mosaic projects and gave me the confidence also. Very friendly relaxing atmosphere, I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to start mosaics. It was worth the trip from Bristol. Natalie Dixon – Nov 2008

I really enjoyed your workshop and I learned so much. I feel that I was able to accomplish more in the day I spent with you than I would have been able to achieve in a taking a series of classes. Your workshop offers amazing chance gain one-on-one assistance and insight. I think one thing that definitely became apparent to me is the amount of time it takes to create a mosaic. I wish I would have planned out my piece more ahead of time, however, working through the entire process in one day really gave me a greater appreciation for mosaic art. Your workshop really has inspired me to take up mosaics! Beth Chesterman – Oct 2008

I have made a couple of mosaic’s myself prior to the workshop, but found what I learned invaluable and a great help to allow me to advance my techniques to the next level. Nathalie was fantastic and was always on hand to assist with question and queries and pointers in the right direction, whilst not looking over your shoulder all the time and making you feel intimidated. The day was overall thoroughly enjoyable and I would certainly attend one again. David Henshaw: January 2009

Thank you so much for a delightful day yesterday making mosaics. I really enjoyed the process and was surprised how my easily my ideas came to shape the work. Your guidance and hospitality made the day really great. Susan Faulkner, May 2009

Just a quick note to say thank you for a really interesting and fun day on Tuesday. Both Lucinda and I really enjoyed ourselves and wouldn't hesitate to recommend your course to other friends. Thank you, too, for such a delicious lunch - definitely an unexpected bonus! I am attaching a few photos of my cleaned-up mosaic - I'm absolutely thrilled with it. I even took it straight out to dinner on Tuesday evening, still covered in grout, to show my husband and friends! I'm very keen to have another go now! Claire Casket – June 2009

Thank you Nathalie for a very enjoyable day and a delicious lunch. You made the whole process of learning how to make mosaic very easy for a total beginner and I now know enough to start creating on my own pieces. I will definitively be recommending your workshop to my friends. Caroline Lehoux – July 2009

Thank you for an excellent introduction to mosaic. I found your hands-on unbossy way of teaching very conducive to learning. The lunch was delicious and it was lovely to be in such a beautiful house full of your inspirational work. My family were impressed with my finished pigeon tile which is now proudly displayed on our kitchen dresser Annabel Church Smith – July 2009

Thanks for a fabulous weekend! I really enjoyed meeting & working with you in your lovely home. It was great to learn so much & have the opportunity to create something, I feel really inspired about making my garden piece now! I'm so glad I came back today. The lunches were also delicious.. Samah Pimenta – August 2009

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the workshop last weekend and the company of the other people too. Lizzie Law – August 2009

I really enjoyed my weekend with Nathalie learning how to use mosaic. It was really nice to watch the work in progress of the rest of the group as well as to work on my own project and we learnt from each other. I came away with an item that I will treasure in my home as well as the confidence to try something on my own now. Thank you Nathalie. Isabel Gwyther – August 2009

I just wanted to thank you again on behalf of my friend, Pam, and myself for a wonderful workshop and a lovely lunch. We both learned a lot and are very enthusiastic about continuing to develop our mosaic talents. Annette OHara – Pamela Lyness – October 2009

I just wanted to email to say a huge thank you for such a fabulous weekend workshop. I found the course very inspiring and I’ve already order my tools and tiles so I can continue at home! It was amazing how much I learnt over the weekend. It was really lovely to meet you and I found your teaching style very relaxed and supportive. You made us all feel so welcome and the lunch you prepared was so delicious. I have been raving about your course to all my friends as I couldn’t recommend it enough. Rebecca Lupton – January 2010

I would highly recommend Natalie's fantastic workshops. I recently completed her one day course. As a complete beginner, I was wondering what I could learn in that time, but I was amazed by my results and how much I learnt in a short time. Her instructions were very clear and she encouraged everyone to follow their own inspiration, within the limits of the medium. She was very good at helping us all adapt our ideas to what would be achievable in the time available. Because she has a maximum group size, there was lots of time for individual tuition. It was a fantastic experience and for me, the beginning of a new interest. Kathy Turk – Nov 2009

With regards to the workshop, I thoroughly enjoyed the hands on approach. The advice given was useful however your presence was not overwhelming, you allowed us to use our own creative interpretation. I would recommend the course to anyone that was interested in mosaic, and it has given me a buzz to enrol into other courses and I have even started to draw again! Claire – January 2010

I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful workshop over the weekend. I really enjoyed it and am feeling truly inspired! This is definitely something I would like to continue doing. Angela Finney – April 2010

I attended the workshop at Nathalie's with 5 others. The class was the right size to have comfortable, almost like a one on one session with Nathalie. I felt it was even better than a one on one training, as I learnt a lot just from the work of others' and the questions they came up with. Nathalie is friendly and attentive and makes sure that one has understood and mastered the techniques. She also has suggestions on the creative side when one is stuck! I recommend this workshop highly to novices who are also not artistically inclined :) A one day workshop definitely showed me everything I should know to work on my own. Viji Mahonoran – April 2010

I attended Nathalie’s mosaic workshop and found it to be a very enjoyable, inspiring experience. The venue was inviting and relaxing, the other students friendly, humorous and supportive. Great music and superb food! Nathalie got us working as soon as possible and was always on hand with help, advice and encouragement. Being able to see examples Nathalie’s work up close was an inspiration in itself. It was wonderful to be part of a creative/artistic environment such as this. Very much recommended. Ron Wellington – April 2010

Thank you for a lovely weekend of Mosaic. I really enjoyed the friendly relaxed atmosphere that you created. I will definitely come again when I find time to spoil myself with another weekend dedicated to my artistic side. Shaun Robert – June 20-10

I've been wanting to try my hand at mosaic for ages and finally I got my chance when I found Nathalie's course. It was definitely one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had. Nathalie's instructions were clear and easy to understand and she was on hand throughout to impart her expert advice and guidance on how to proceed to get the best possible results. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her and the meals she provided on both days were delicious. If you're keen to try mosaic then Nathalie's course is definitely a winner. LEE French – July 2010

Thank you so much for the wonderful day yesterday! I feel very lucky to have found my way to the door of such a gifted mosaic instructor and genuine person. I can only recommend the friendly atmosphere and generous encouragement, and found the calm attention and focus with which you supported me in my work allowed me to not only complete a beautiful mosaic but in the process be relaxed and be myself. The food you prepared was fantastic. Thanks also for sharing this special venue, your materials, ideas and knowledge. Jeanette, London - 2007

Nathalie's mosaic workshop was an inspiration. She taught in a clear, sensitive and unobtrusive fashion, encouraging and guiding the student all the way. I was delighted with the results and feel that I now have a hobby for life. She inspired me to go on to create further mosaics and has even offered to help me to fix my mosaic to the wall of my house. Even the lunch provided was fantastic. I thoroughly recommend this workshop. It has taught me that even those of us without a background in art can create beautiful works of art. Carmen Walsh, Brighton - 2005

Just wanted to say thank you again for the great time I had in the workshop, and for teaching me how to create mosaic art. I came looking to learn the basic techniques, which I feel confident I now know, but the workshop was much more than that. I was inspired by your work, and by the work of the other 'students' in the workshop. I'm now creating mosaic art at home, and it has become a passion! I only wish I had started doing it earlier...This is something I feel is a great outlet for my creativity and love of colours, and it is also so relaxing and therapeutic. Mosaic art making is something I'm going to try and pursue as much as I can, and I'm hoping (dreaming...?) of cutting down my working hours so that I have more time for making my mosaic art. In a way, the workshop changed my life by releasing this creative passion! Sara Ulsparre, London

It was just what I was looking for and succeeded in filling me with the enthusiasm necessary to continue mosaics at home. I found the course very absorbing, and if I was unduly quiet from time to time it was because I was concentrating so hard! I now have the supplies to enable me to start a project. These were obtained from Barbara in Canterbury as you recommended who is very helpful. When the time comes that I exhibit at The Tate I will ensure my agent invites you to the private preview! Paul Darley, London

Thank you so much for a wonderful, inspiring day. Brilliant, couldn't have been better. Jo Holborn, Newcastle

I would highly recommend Nathalie's mosaic workshop to anyone, whether you think of yourself as an arty person or not. She explained everything perfectly, ie. deciding on a suitable pattern (we looked through heaps of books for inspiration) and while completing the mosaic itself. I chose to do my mosaic on a picture frame. I was able to complete it in the way I wanted to, and Nathalie was there for assistance and to help with suggestions. I am now planning to take mosaics up as a hobby and Nathalie has given me the skills I need to do it on my own. Nathalie is so approachable, friendly and easy going, couldn't ask for a better teacher! Karen, Brighton

Nathalie’s mosaic course is a perfect introduction to the art. The day workshop definitely gave enough information and practice to go out and get my own tiles etc and start making mosaics. Nathalie is a great hostess and provided a delicious lunch for us all. I am really pleased with the work I created and my friends are also very impressed. Thanks! Katrin Nieesert, Brighton

Before I attended Natalie's mosaic workshop, I thought I didn't have a creative bone in my body. Natalie has inspired me to explore my artistic side through her wonderful support, enthusiasm and encouragement. She was so helpful and I am so proud of my finished product! Thanks Natalie! Marion Arthy, Brighton - 2005

Brian and I both thoroughly enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone. You provide gorgeous tiles and your own work was inspirational to us. You were extremely helpful and gave us a marvelous lunch. Thank you. We shall both continue to work on mosaic projects now - in fact I went to IKEA yesterday and bought some plain wooden boxes, including a key holder box, which will be our next projects before we start on something totally ambitious in Spain - Brian wants to do an entire mosaic bench! Gaynor and Brian Williams, London - 2007

I wanted to thank you so much for the workshop, you are such a brilliant teacher and I feel we packed so much into one day. I'm so excited to get making stuff! Roma Norris, London

The mosaic workshop was a very good insight into the world of mosaic. I now really appreciate the work involved. Thank you to Nathalie for going the extra mile and helping me making my project come to life. Delphine, Brighton - 2005
